Comprised of 85% Grenache and 15% Syrah that was aged for 6 months in concrete, it has loads of raspberry, licorice, mineral and Provencal herbs as well as a soft, supple and silky textured feel on the palate. Coming from old Grenache vines 70-90 years in age located on the Plateau de Domazan - which lies on the right bank of the Rhone river, just west of Avignon and bottled unfined and unfiltered, it is a quintessential Cotes du Rhone that will deliver the goods for 4-5 years, possibly longer. The leading estate in the potential rich Costieres de Nimes region, these knockout wines are made by the talented Michel Gassier, who is leading the way in this appellation and showing what’s possible when you focus on quality. Both the 2011s which are as good, if not better than his 2010s and 2012s are incredibly strong here. Product Reviews By Keith Mabry K&L Staff Member Review Date 12/15/2015 Send Email One of the most satisfying Rhone wines I have tasted in a long while, the Cercius offers rich notes of strawberry jam, currant jelly and roasted plums. It has a ripe and full mouthfeel without being heavy or over the top. Pure classic in the making that will reward immediate drinking or a year or two away in the cellar. Cases a must! By Alex Pross K&L Staff Member Review Date 2/23/2015 Send Email One of my perennial favorite value wines is the Michel Gassier “Cercius” Vieilles Vignes Cotes du Rhone. I look forward every year to tasting this outstanding value and the 2012 may be their best vintage to date. Loaded with aromas of marzipan, coffee, spice and plum the 2012 Gassier deftly rolls to a palate of bitter chocolate, graphite, licorice and black raspberry flavors with silky tannins and a lush, long finish. Bravo! Another fantastic value that over-delivers for its meager price-point. Fans of full-bodied, well-made red wines that are affordable can rejoice as they toast a glass to this wonderful producer. Top Value! Drink from 2015 to 2019 Additional Information Varietal Rhone Blends Country France - When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. Sub-Region Rhone - Legendary wine-producing region in southeast France. Stereotypically speaking, Rhone wines are high in alcohol, and the majority produced is red. The northern Rhone is best known for outstanding 100% Syrah wines from areas such as Cote Rotie and Hermitage, as well as for fabulous white wines from Condrieu where Viognier is king. In the southern Rhone, look for spicy, full-bodied wines that are blends of Grenache, Syrah, and other varietals coming from appellations such as Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, or Rasteau. Wines labeled as Cote du Rhone or Cotes du Rhone Village a cut above generic Cotes du Rhone are frequently found here in the US because they often represent some of the best values on the market.
